Is Your Closet Making You Stressed

While getting ready for your day, or packing for a trip, have you ever noticed that your stress level increases while you’re in your closet? If you answered anything other than a firm “no”, your stress could potentially be due to an unorganized or cluttered closet. The stress hormone known as cortisol is one of our worst enemies, reduce your level by straightening up your closet (or anything other messy area in your home)!

Reduce the Clutter in Your Closet

It may sound counter intuitive, but, start by completely emptying your closet. Try to keep your stress level in check during this moment, because once you’re finished, it will have been worth it. Go through every piece that once lived in your closet and ask yourself if you really need it, can you survive without it, and when was the last time it saw the light of day (or an evening out). This task may also include the need to try a few things on and ensuring everything still fits. If it doesn’t fit like it once used to, the chances of it fitting like you imagine it should are fairly slim.

Once you have your “keep pile” it’s time to refill the closet. But, before you go any further, keep in mind that the ultimate goal here is organization. Put all of your shoes, boots, sandals (or any other form of footwear) to one side of the closet based on your preference. Some find it easier to have them lined up from tallest to shortest while others prefer the ones least used tucked away in the back with the most worn pair(s) up front.

Now it’s time to organize your clothes, how they are organized is your personal preference. Most find the least stressful way to organize clothes is by category: dress pants, dress shirts, sweaters, activewear, etc. You may want to keep in mind how the clothes will hang in the closet and if longer items have the potential to block something such as taller boots. If you feel as though this may trigger your cortisol hormone, find an alternative before getting further into the project.
