- Application Fees
When applying for a rental, you’ll find that the majority of apartments require all potential tenants pay an application fee. - Utility Deposits
Most utility companies require a deposit as soon as you move into your new apartment. Deposits can run anywhere from $150 to $400, so call your new utility provider before you move to find out the amount you will have to pay—and figure it into your budget.
- Renters Insurance
Renters insurance is a must for anyone moving into a new apartment. It protects your belongings, but also limits your liability in the event of an emergency. The cost of renter’s insurance is based on the approximate value of your belongings and how much of that you want to insure. Basic plans can start at around $10 a month and go up from there. Renters insurance is a fixed, monthly cost to factor into your budget, but one that usually needs to be renewed every year.
- Laundry Service
When looking at new apartments many people forget about laundry services. The way your apartment provides laundry services can have an impact on your monthly budget. While in-unit laundry is a big plus, you may find yourself dealing with on-site communal machines, or no laundry service at all. - Parking Fees
If you’re looking to live in an apartment, make sure you ask about their parking fees. Some apartments charge for parking through a tag or gate key. At Rosetti, our apartments come with ample outdoor parking with additional storage and parking garages available at some locations.
- Cost of Moving
If you are utilizing a moving service, make sure you know what fees they are charging. They may have a heavy item fee which can add up quickly depending on how they define heavy. They also may need to send special equipment or trucks with lifts if the item is large. Other moving expenses like fuel may not be included in your move. Even if you are moving your belongings yourself, make sure to budget fuel and truck rentals. You may even need to consider moving boxes and tap into your budget if you do not have access to free boxes.
- Replacing Damaged Items
Accidents can happen to anyone, but when expensive items break during the moving process, you could take a financial loss after having to replace them. A good moving company will offer basic insurance against damage, but if you are moving high priced items, such as big screen TVs and electronics, you may want to purchase additional insurance to cover the replacement cost if an item is damaged during your move.
